The ideal candidate will be committed to sustainable agriculture, with a demonstrated interest in using policy, organizing and campaigning to effect systems change. The position requires occasional work on weekends and evenings and travel regularly throughout the state, with overnight travel averaging twice per month. We are looking for an energetic, independent individual with excellent communication skills to help manage harvest on our certified organic blueberry farm during the 2018 harvest season (May-August). This is a seasonal full-time position. We are one of the longest-operating certified organic blueberry farms in California and have an established customer base and market. Our farm is located in the foothills east of Chico, in Northern California. 
 
We require a commitment of 7-8 weeks minimum for the duration of the harvest season and have limited work available before and after harvest. This position involves managing the harvest crew, quality control and logistics, driving a 2-ton truck and loading and offloading pallets. Typical work days are 5:30 am to late afternoon, 5-6 days a week for the harvest; weather conditions range from cool mornings to hot afternoons – ability to work outdoors in these conditions is a must. Farm experience and Spanish language skills are helpful. A valid driver’s license is required; no children or pets. Housing may be available. The farm is remotely located, and limited transportation to town is provided.

Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Secretary, the Staff Services Manager I (Specialist) will collaborate with stakeholders to identify issues of importance to socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers. The SSM I (Specialist) will be responsible for establishing a clear vision to achieve productive results to enhance the ability for socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers to have access to services and programs to operate their enterprise independently and efficiently. The SSM I (Specialist) will work closely with and take direction from the Deputy Secretary of Administration and Finance.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the Farm Equity Officer to provide sufficient and appropriate technical assistance and outreach activities for socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers.
  • Establish, develop, and implement methods and resources needed to maintain an effective outreach program to engage socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers.
  • Independently research, evaluate, and deploy diverse communication strategies for effectively keeping the stakeholder base informed of all relevant information.
  • Travel throughout the State to participate in various meetings with diverse stakeholder groups to keep informed on issues; communicate regularly with the Secretary and Deputy Secretary on updates and issues.
  • Participate, draft, develop, and implement policies and procedures to insure CDFA meets the requirements of the Farmer Equity Act of 2017.
  • Develop, draft, prepare, and submit all required reports to the Governor and Legislature on a timely basis. 
  • Consult with representatives from state agencies (including the California Environmental Protection Agency, the Natural Resources Agency, the Business, Consumer Services, and Housing Agency, and the California Health and Human Services Agency) and all other interested members of the public and private sectors of the state on opportunities for socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers and to coordinate state programs.
