Organic Farming Research Foundation is currently seeking a Research Program Director to lead the research grants initiatives, the development of analytical products, and overall educational efforts. 
This new, senior level position provides an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to build on OFRF’s body of work, to develop programs that encourage more farmers to adopt organic practices and grow the sector, and strategically help guide the organization through its next phase of growth.

The Research Program Director reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for:

  • overseeing OFRF’s research grants program and ensuring that OFRF-funded research is responsive to the needs of the organic family farmer
  • developing analytical products that will inform OFRF research, education, and advocacy efforts, including monitoring the research needs of organic farmers and trends in organic research
  • strategizing on approaches to integrate organic research and programs into colleges and universities with agricultural programs
  • facilitating communication of research results to the farmers in an accessible manner

The Research Program Director position is a full-time position based in Santa Cruz, CA.

QUALIFICATIONS

Skills and Experience

  • Master’s degree (or above) in an agricultural science or related field
  • Knowledge of organic food and farming; familiarity with organic research
  • Ability to think strategically about the application of research and research policy in order to support the organization’s goals
  • Demonstrated track record of managing productive teams that deliver results. Experience with supervising staff and consultants, developing budgets, managing deadlines and data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Mac and PC and in common software applications (especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database programs)
  • Experience writing grant proposals, particularly with interdisciplinary teams of researchers and educators from diverse institutions.
  • Ability to communicate complex science-related issues to farmers and other non-scientific audiences
  • Customer-service experience to ensure that all interface with OFRF’s diverse constituents is clear, positive, and engaging
  • Experience communicating with farmers and researchers

POSITION OVERVIEW 
 
The Organic Farming Research Foundation is seeking a Development Officer to coordinate fundraising initiatives. The position offers great potential for the right candidate to support the organization through the next phase of growth. The Development Officer reports to the Executive Director (ED) and is responsible for overseeing foundation relationships and proposals; individual donor relationships and solicitations; corporate sponsorships; special events; direct mail; and online giving. 
 
The Development Officer works closely with the ED and staff to design and implement an effective fundraising plan to meet and grow the annual operating budget. This position oversees the master development calendar and the development database. The Development Officer plays a key role in supporting the ED’s cultivation of high donors. 
 
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
 
Strategic Development 
 
  • Assist in developing annual fundraising goals 
  • Work with ED, staff, and consultants to meet goals 
  • Maintain accurate and thorough records 
  • Monitor and report on quarterly progress towards goals 
  • Coordinate the production of annual report, including all financial reports 
  • Support the ED in designing/implementing other creative fundraising opportunities and programs such as planned giving, membership-based programs, merchandising, etc. 
     
Individual Donors
 
  • Design and implement stewardship programs to expand current donor base, increase level of giving, and re-engage lapsed donors 
  • Manage development of materials to support major gifts 
  • Coordinate electronic communication to increase online giving and donor base Initiate donor acknowledgements, including personal calls from Board, letters, annual report, web, and signage or naming opportunities 
  • Coordinate the creation and production of fund-raising materials, including two appeals per year in support of annual fund 
  • Assist ED in stewarding all donors 
     
Grants 
 
  • Write grant proposals, including budgeting, in association with ED and program staff 
  • Manage grant deliverables and reporting for existing grants 
  • Research and develop opportunities for new grant funding 
  • Assist ED in managing relationships with Foundations 
     
Database and Web Management 
 
  • Manage donor database, ensuring timely data input for prospect and stewardship tracking 
  • Prepare and present a variety of reports including contact and giving history 
  • Coordinate expansion of web-based fundraising 
     
Events 
 
  • Work with ED and other staff in the design and production of fundraising events 
  • Coordinate event/host committees, corporate sponsors, in-kind donations 
     
Corporate Sponsorship 
 
  • Assist ED in managing corporate relationships and donor stewardship 
  • Work with ED to identify, track, and negotiate appropriate sponsorship opportunities; draft contracts as needed
  • Develop supporting materials 
     
QUALIFICATIONS 
 
The ideal candidate will be a versatile development professional possessing a minimum of 3-5 years of philanthropic development experience illustrating a successful history in raising funds through a range of activities including individual donors, foundations, corporations, direct mail, e-fundraising, grant writing, and special events.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF) is recruiting a Communications Coordinator.  This is a non-exempt, part-time, 20 hours per week position reporting to the Executive Director. The Communications Coordinator will provide the organizational and technical support needed for OFRF to meet its strategic communications objectives, as follows:

  • Support the success of organic farmers by making research results and technical information accessible to them
  • Educate researchers and policy makers about the needs of organic producers
  • Create a better-informed public on organic farming issues   
  • Provide information to other organizations who work on organic farming issues
  • Raise awareness about OFRF’s programs among strategic audiences

The Organic Farming Research Foundation regularly serves as a resource for topics related to organic farming research, farm policy, and the organic industry. The Communications Coordinator will manage our various communication tools and ensure we are effectively communicating organic research, education and policy topics to our stakeholders.  In addition to managing our electronic newsletter and website, our Communications person will track important organic stories and respond to information requests from organic farmers and the media. The Communications Coordinator will work closely with other program staff to make sure they have support for education and outreach.

The Communications Coordinator will bring excellent writing and editing skills to OFRF.  The desired employee will be well versed in social media. The Communications Coordinator must be able to perform widespread searches of news articles that pertain to current trends in organic farming and be able to disseminate the results using several communication outlets such as email, newsletters, and printed publications. The ideal candidate will have experience using databases and be familiar with data entry. Working in partnership with staff, the Communications Coordinator will perform the following principal duties:

Job Duties:

  • Collect and distribute practical information to the organic farming community.
  • Ensure the timely distribution of organic farming information to researchers, policy makers and the general public.
  • Coordinate social networking through Facebook, Twitter and other similar services.
  • Manage website content.
  • Draft press releases.
  • Manage and contribute content to regular electronic newsletters
  • Contribute to the writing of OFRF’s information products using basic content input from program staff.
  • Assist in OFRF’s capability to respond quickly to breaking news items and stories.
  • Coordinate OFRF’s web and email messaging campaigns. 
  • Maintain relationships with media professionals, arranging interviews when such opportunities arise
  • Maintain OFRF’s media list and image archives
  • From time to time, provide general administrative support such as answering phones, responding to emails, and be able to work well in an office environment.
  • Manage contacts in salesforce database.

Primary Job Responsibilities:
- Make weekly visits to yards of Farmscape members at regularly scheduled times
- Manage all aspects of annual vegetable cultivation from planning and planting plots, fertilization and pest control, to leaving a harvest on each member’s doorstep
- Keep detailed records during weekly visits
- Maintain good relationships with members, both in-person and via phone/email
