Farmscape Urban Farmer (San Fernando Valley)

Farmscape is seeking a full-time Urban Farmer to maintain residential and school gardens predominantly in the San Fernando Valley Area.
A Farmscape Urban Farmer…
• Maintains all assigned farms at schools and residences at regularly scheduled times.
• Tracks planting or replanting times, solves pest and disease problems, amends soil, harvests produce, repairs irrigation issues, etc.
• Acts proactively to prevent issues with the garden.
• Manages regular personal schedule of weekly visits.
• Manages service inventory for assigned gardens: tools, pest and disease control products, seeds and plants, trellises and other garden accessories.
• Keeps regular and organized service logs of weekly visits.
• Collaborates with Farmscape staff to resolve garden issues that are difficult or complex.
• May help with R&D of Farmscape farming methods. May assist with training staff.
• Maintains good customer relationships, both in-person and via phone/email.
• Answers customer concerns in a timely manner and communicates problems upward.
• Represents Farmscape products and services in a professional manner.
• Attends staff, service, and training meetings as required
• Additional tasks, as assigned by your manager.
School Garden Responsibilities
• Makes weekly visits to school gardens at regularly scheduled times.
• Oversees and coordinates hands-on experiences through garden classes with students (ages 4-18) in gardening, earth science, botany, nutrition, and related topics, tailored to appropriate age levels.
• Prepares and maintains all teaching materials (ie: posters, bug-collecting supplies, garden tools…).
• Maintains and further develops Farmscape School Garden Curriculum and best practices.
• Works closely with teachers to develop lessons that support cross-curricular classroom teaching.
• Manages relationships with assigned contacts (teachers, administrators, etc) for all school gardens and collaborates with school staff when appropriate.
• Keeps track of school calendars including holiday breaks and special events.
Qualifications
• Experience with annual vegetable cultivation required
• Experience working with classrooms, youth groups, children
• Ability to work independently
• Valid driver’s license and a working vehicle
• Related education in horticulture, crop science, etc. a plus
• Ability to learn and adapt to Farmscape best practices
• Friendly and clear communicator
• Organizational skills and attention to detail a must
Compensation
Commensurate with experience. Benefits package available to full-time farmers.
