40-50 hours per week, Wednesdays- Sundays
This position is responsible for overseeing and managing our certified organic pastured egg operation of about 700 hens. The position also includes a weekly farmers’ market and helping out with other farm work when time allows (strictly chicken related work takes about 25-30 hours of a 40-45 hour work week).
Pay: starting $12-$14/hour experience depending with 6 month reviews of performance for raises. Health Insurance benefits included.
Qualifications: Self-directed, good at self managing, detail-oriented, good communication skills, basic spanish, previous farming experience required, previous animal husbandry experience required, interest and passion for improving systems and efficiency, and a love of animals (the job also entails the daily care and loving of our extremely sweet and cuddly livestock guardian dog Henri)
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
-daily care of birds
-Manage the weekly moving of both coops and maintenance of pasture
-Manage and coordinate the cleaning the coops once every four weeks. Refresh straw and wood shavings.
-Monitor health of the birds and coordinate the treatment of coops/birds when necessary.
-Keep ongoing inventory of the necessary inputs and supplies and make a plan with business owners to ensure that they are always on site, (feed, oyster shell, straw, wood shavings, hose repair supplies, etc.).
- routine maintenance (repair waterers, replace broken fence posts) and monitor the need for more major repairs.
- deal with ordering chicks annually and setting up brooder as well as care of chicks in brooder
-managing the annual culling (slaughter) of the older hens
-caring for and being Henri’s person-giving him meds/setting up vet visits, treats, making sure he has food, gets groomed, etc.
