Job Description
The University of Nevada, Reno Experiment Station’s Desert Farming Initiative seeks to fill a full-time Faculty position as the Assistant Farm Manager. The Assistant Farm Manager (FPM) will directly report to and work closely with the Program Manager and the Farm Production Manager. This position will be required to follow direction from upper management to execute all farming tasks assigned and take on a level of management or entirely manage specific components of the DFI Valley Road field station hoop house production. The position will assist the Farm Production Manager in executing all vegetable row crop production and farming tasks on a day to day basis and will serve a field supervisory role to farm employees, student employees, interns, and volunteers. The Assistant Farm Manager will be the primary manager for the research vineyards at the Valley Road field station. This position will directly report to and work closely with the Program Manager for all vineyard management tasks. The Assistant Farm Manager will also manage all greenhouse tasks working closely with the Farm Production Manager. This position will serve a critical role in the farm education programs, facilitating hands-on farming education and training to student employees and interns. Lastly, the position will work in close communication with DFI staff to ensure food safety law compliance, certification requirements, and record and data keeping.
The DFI has three primary goals: provide an educational program in sustainable farming systems for desert climates; provide research and hands-on educational experience to UNR faculty, students, the agricultural industry and community; and demonstrate working agricultural systems in desert climates. The Farm Assistant Manager will play a critical role in achieving these goals on the ground and assisting the Farm Production Manager in maintaining a highly productive farm that serves these goals to the highest capacity. In addition, the position will participate in workshops and community outreach held at the Desert Farming Initiative.

Required Qualifications
High School Graduation and four years of related work experience; OR Associate’s Degree and three years of related work experience; OR Bachelor’s Degree and two years of related work experience; OR Master’s Degree and one year of related work experience.
Related experience: farm and or ranch experience as a field worker, or supervisory position; working on diversified vegetable and fruit farm, and or vineyard.
Preferred Qualifications
Applicants with college level courses of related topics, including – soil science, agronomy, horticulture, earth science, botany, and or ecology are encouraged to apply. Applicants with one year of farm and or garden employment experience on a commercial farm or market garden, and or internship or apprenticeship experience on a commercial farm or market garden are encouraged to apply.
