Farm Intern/Apprentice Sought

$

Springfed Organic Farm and Nursery seeks an intern or interns to help with all aspects of the farm. We need someone to start in late August 2014 or anytime thereafter. Length of stay is flexible. Springfed is a good example of the “one woman, one rototiller, one acre” mode of market gardening. You'll assist in all aspects of operating a certified organic market garden (about 3/4 acre), a certified organic nursery specializing in perennial vegetables and medicinal herbs (over 50 spp.), and basic jane-of-all-trades homestead work, from plumbing to wiring to carpentry. You'll learn about plant propagation, the art of feral gardening (edible weeds are a huge part of our business), herbal medicine making, seed saving, and the ecology of interior California. (Farm proprietress Wolfgang Rougle is a wild food educator and author of the wild food cookbook/bioregional manifesto "Sacramento Valley Feast! Or: Don't Eat Sterile, Eat Feral!") You should bring at least 4 months ag experience, good communication skills and emotional intelligence, a sense of humor, and a love of solitude. Sales/retail experience is a plus (for farmers' market). We don't require that you have your own transportation, but you'll probably be happier if you do (esp. if you'll be here longer than a week or two). You must have your own health insurance.

Room and board are provided as well as a small weekly stipend. We'll gladly work with you to help you secure academic credit from your institution, if necessary. THIS IS A WOMAN-OWNED BUSINESS AND WOMEN ARE ESPECIALLY ENCOURAGED TO APPLY.

Grange Farm School

LIVE-WORK-STUDY FARM PROGRAM OPENS

Gain hands-on practical farming experience at the Grange Farm School this season! Grange Farm School will host its first Practicum Students May through October of 2014 on the historic Ridgewood Ranch in Mendocino County, California. Established in 2013, this newly emerging hub of agricultural education offers students the experience of building a farm from the ground up. Students and Faculty will collaboratively design and implement plans for a sustainable farm, working with crops and livestock while building new farm infrastructure.

This full immersion program gives residential students a thorough understanding of the complexity that goes into generating a new model for farming efficiently and sustainably. Our curriculum covers organic agricultural production methods coupled with industrial arts and business skills essential to any successful farm. Teaching the basic foundations of a sustainable small farm business is our primary goal, but we also provide a platform for experimentation and progressive design. Students with a specific interest are offered the opportunity to design, build, research, and test their ideas. A successful farmer must demonstrate the ability to think creatively and work efficiently, and here at the Grange Farm School we foster an atmosphere for just this kind of work.

Program:
Students receive food, housing, and earn college credit and are expected to work an average of 25 hours per week on projects supporting the farm. Tuition is $300 per month, and many scholarships are available.
Students must commit to a minimum of one month at the Grange Farm School, although we highly encourage a longer term. After one month of foundational learning, students have the option to develop their individual Capstone Project. These projects allow students to focus on an area of individual interest and guide their own learning. We provide a space for a wide range of independent projects, and we are excited to hear proposals from students who are curious self-starters. Examples of potential projects include:

  • plan and construct worm composting system
  • build a solar powered dehydrator
  • design and plant a cut flower garden
  • build processing equipment such as root washer or chicken plucker

Concurrent enrollment in Work Experience Education program with Mendocino College or a similar program is required, and the Grange Farm School will cover registration costs at Mendocino College.

Application Instructions: In 2014 applications are accepted on a rolling basis, apply at any time. Find the complete program description and application questionnaire at: http://www.grangefarmschool.org/Training-program
Return the Practicum Student Questionnaire to info@grangefarmschool.org

ISO SHEEP DAIRY LAND LEADS IN GREATER SF BAY AREA: We currently raise our flock of 70 dairy sheep on a Certified Organic, leased ranch for the seasonal production of farmstead sheep cheese and sheep milk soap. We also produce Certified Organic Cow cheese with locally purchased milk. Our flock of sheep is humane certified by the Animal Welfare Institute and our Creamery is a mixed use, USDA Certified Organic Processing facility. We constructed our mobile sheep dairy (20x10) and creamery (40x12) out of two portable classroom trailers, for the flexibility of relocation and expansion. Our sustainable farm practice includes: rotational pasture management, green building, water re-use from the creamery for irrigation and solar. Our lease has ended, and its time for us to relocate. We are in search of more pasture access, and a location to expand into more education based, agri-tourism. We hope to relocate our flock, our small household, and our dairy facility (20x10), as early as November 2014. We need a minimum of 17+ acres, a dry barn with power and water (prefer a large hay barn style where we can relocate our dairy trailer, store feed and utilize as animal shelter under one roof). Our water requirements for the dairy is ≤ 60gl/day, for 5-6 mos. milking season (~April-Oct). On the current property, our wash water is approved for re-irrigation back onto pastures. We can build out some infrastructure. We need to live on property with our flock so property with housing is preferred although we can bring on a tiny house on wheels. Please contact us if you know of a property that might be well suited for our small but flourishing business.

Want to live and work in the Adirondack Mountains of New York?

We are an eclectic family consisting of an aging Grandma, 2 moms, 2 kids and many animals! Our history on how we all came together is interesting, but long story short, we find ourselves in need of help and are hoping this website may connect us to the right people.

About us in a few words: Organic, Healthy, Natural, Horse Trainers, Gardeners, Motivated, Hardworking, Fortunate, Happy, Informed, Yoga, the Great Outdoors, No Cable TV, Honest, Trustworthy, Communicative.....

You: Same as us, or open minded to new things: Less Drama, More Living in the Moment with a Positive Outlook on Life!

We are a happily married gay couple with a wonderful family, looking to coexist and share our 68 acre ranch in the High Peaks Region with another committed couple or person. No "crazies" need apply! Our house is huge, and there are opportunities on the horizon! (B & B? Artist/Yoga Retreat? Family Condo?) This has all been built on Karma, and we are on a good path! Should ours cross?

Note: Besides the hamster, all pets live outside the house. We prefer you not have a dog, unless you are ok with him/her living outside with our pack of dogs, cats and rabbits. (Access to heated indoor room. Its quite a life!) Horse(s) are welcomed! More children... maybe.

This is more of an opportunity of a lifetime than a good paying job.... We just get by financially, we eat good food and this place has major potential for something more than it is. With the right people with grand ideas, there are major possibilities here.

What can you contribute and why do you think you would be a great addition to the ranch? Looking forward to hearing from you all!
