Farm Manager wanted in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

About Us: 

We are a ranch in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, México looking for an experienced farmer to help us start a small, organic, no-till market garden. 



This is an excellent opportunity for a farmer who has the skills to operate his/her own farm but doesn’t have the necessary finances to buy land.

 

Essential Duties: 

  • To plan and put into practice an Organic farm utilizing no-till, no-spray agriculture - starting from scratch (you’ll be given the staff and budget you need to complete all tasks) 
  • Preparing land, irrigation, erecting greenhouses, building raised beds 
  • Detailed record keeping + budgeting (you will have assistance with this) 
  • Crop rotation 
  • 2 year minimum commitment with a one season trial period

 

Qualifications: 

  • Fluency in Spanish 
  • Minimum 2 years managing a for-profit organic farm 
  • Ability + desire to move to Mexico for a multi-year commitment 
  • Valid US (or Mexican!) driver’s license 
  • Flexibility in your work hours and overall attitude 
  • You should know how to: build a greenhouse, practice no-till agriculture (or be ready, willing, and excited to learn), know how to create a thriving and healthy eco-system on the farm, as no pesticides, organic or not, will be permitted; how to compost, etc. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of agricultural practices, whole farm planning, crop rotation, soil enhancement methods, soil science and general ecological principles 
  • Ability to manage workers (in Spanish) 
  • Ability to work with and for meticulous owners and managers 
  • Passion for learning about not only plants, but the agricultural heritage of where you will be farming 
  • Bonus: experience with animals, although we’ll be bringing on an HM livestock manager next, so this is not essential

 

Compensation: 

  • $45,000 USD annual salary plus potential incentives in following years 
  • Housing on the ranch + a vehicle to use locally will be included 
  • 2 weeks paid vacation
  • The right candidate for this position will be sent to a farm in Northern California for a two-week intensive, paid apprenticeship this spring (ideally by April or May) to learn no-till vegetable farming from farmers who have mastered the practice. The farmers that train you will also act as consultants in San Miguel this summer to help us get the farm up an running, and provide phone and email consultations as needed in the months following.
