McEvoy Ranch in Petaluma has an opening for a full-time position as our Farming Supervisor. Under the direction of the Director of Ranch Operations, this position supervises and coordinates all of the various farming activities to maintain the vineyard and orchard operations of McEvoy Ranch.
McEvoy Ranch is a producer and marketer of fine Extra Virgin Olive Oil, specialty foods, wine, merchandise, and events. Our vineyards and orchards produce our award-winning wines and olive oils. Responsibilities
- Directs a workforce consisting of equipment operators, mechanics, irrigators, as well as contractors. While working alongside staff, the Farming Supervisor manages and tracks the crew’s daily activities
- Responsible for all activities for olive tree and grapevine care, which include dormant and green pruning, lateral and fruit thinning, planting and replanting, trellis maintenance and care of young plants
- Soil management including soil and petiole sampling, fertilizer, cover crop application, erosion control and water management
- Pest management including pesticide applications, weeding and bird netting,
- In conjunction with the Director of Ranch Operations ensures efficient harvesting of fruit from orchards and vineyards
- Operates tractors and other farm equipment
- Trains farm staff in all procedures and ensures safety procedures are followed.
- Reports directly to the Director of Ranch Operations the status of projects and overall condition of the crops and relays any need for additional resources, including the inventory of all products used and ensure that projects are completed in a timely manner, efficiently and with a high level of quality.
Experience and Qualifications
- 3-5 years of experience involving both on the job experience and informal training with experienced workers in the vineyard industry
- Previous supervisory experience required
- Bilingual English/Spanish; written and oral
- Ability to bring energy and accountability to tasks and team
- Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team
- Detail oriented and skilled in organizing projects and time
- Strong communication skills
- Basic computer skills (email, Word/Excel familiarity)
- Ability to multi-task and be flexible
- Experience with tractors, hand tools, power tools as well as basic knowledge of vineyard/orchard equipment such as mowers, sprayers, blowers, weed whip, hand seeders, mulch spreaders, spreaders, hand held sprayers, arborist saws, pruning saws, pruning knives
- Previous experience in irrigation installation and repair a plus
Physical Demands
- Prolonged physical activity required including standing, sitting, climbing, squatting, kneeling, bending, mixing, loading, reaching, lifting and walking on uneven ground for prolonged periods of time.
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
- Works outdoors year-round
