Farmer - Sheriff's Department

Under direction of the Planning and Projects Division, through the Sheriff Bureau of Building Services (SBBS), sworn command or civilian personnel, the farmer performs various agricultural duties in the operation of the land that is managed by the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department, adjacent to the jail on County Jail property. The farmer is responsible for the efficient utilization of land, equipment and farm supplies.
 
The essential functions include: plowing, disking, cultivating and preparing the soil; planting, irrigating, fertilizing and harvesting crops; pruning trees; organically controlling weeds, rodents, and other pests; foliage obstruct and fire risk abatement; and operating and maintaining farm tools and equipment including the preventative maintenance and general care of the tractor and tool attachments and parts. The farmer is also charged with the care of the farm building, the green house area, and all landscaping and planting around the buildings. The farmer also demonstrates farming concepts and techniques to program participants. Performs related duties as required.
 
The San Bruno site has federally identified and protected wetlands along with several protected habitats. Applicants shall demonstrate general knowledge of safety guidelines and protection measures from hazardous discharge and/or intrusion of protected habitats.
 
In addition, the farmer must conduct regular weeding around the facility (including secured perimeter), the sewage plants, and the outer perimeter including the parking lots and immediate areas at the front gate security check-point. These areas extend to all roads and road side drainage.
