Summary
Under the direction of the Vineyard Manager and other Eco Terreno Vineyards (ETV) leadership team, assist with duties required to maintain the company’s animal programs. Key responsibilities will entail establishing and overseeing animal husbandry programs and supporting efforts throughout the farms, gardens, and vineyards. Our team is looking to welcome a new member within the next month.
Animal Husbandry
- Perform all duties of animal husbandry for vineyard animals including: evaluating health, purchasing and tracking feed, and socialization
- Developing and implementing the movement of mobile chicken coops and flocks within the vineyard while also working on increasing our flock size
- Maintaining, moving, and installing electrical fencing for animal movement
- Development and implement goat movement plan within property as weed eradication
- Develop goat milk production plan
- Build vineyard and farm infrastructure to set up seasonal sheep herds in the vineyards and create movement plan
- Work closely with vineyard team leadership and members to develop movement plans in relation to growth of vines, pest and disease pressure, and spray schedules
- Use critical thinking to develop and communicate animal management plan to entire ETV team
- Participate in and contribute to management meetings for high level decision making
Gardens and Insectaries Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Take direction from Vineyard Manager and ETW Vineyards leadership team to ensure all animal movements are completed in accordance with direction from ETV leadership
- Assist in cataloging all animal movement
- Work with ETV team to build additional chicken tractors and animal housing
- Assist with all biodynamic activities, including preps and certifications as directed
- Participate in vineyard program work and gardens program as needed/directed
Job Requirements
- Education/Experience: BS in an Agricultural Field with comprehensive gardening experience; Or 5 years animal husbandry experience
- Familiarity and passion for biodynamics, organic and perma-culture practices
- Working knowledge of the seasonality of farm and animal work
- Knowledge: Basic animal husbandry skills; local plant species; poisonous plants for goats and chickens; intensive grazing techniques and strategies
- Strong observational skills
- A healthy dose of humor
- The ability to work and contribute as a team member
- Willingness to work and grow in all capacities that a growing wine farm requires
- Other: Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet the company’s automobile insurance requirements
Language Skills:
- Fluent in English (Required) and Spanish (Preferred). Strong oral communication skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as vineyard work order documents and scripts and to write routine report/spreadsheets and correspondence.
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to do simple math and conversions. Ability to interpret graphs and analysis results.
Reasoning Ability:
- Intermediate Skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills:
- Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook (or equivalent programs preferred).
