Job Description
Title: Farm Management Assistant II 
Status: Full-Time, Exempt, At-Will 
Salary range: $15.00-$18.00 per hour 
Reports to: Farm Manager 
Schedule: Forty hours per week; overtime when necessary; flexible schedule according to need. 
 
The Farm Management Assistant supports ALBA’s Farm Manager in farm operations at the Rural Development Center, including the maintenance of common areas and the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems and farm equipment, including ALBA’s hoop houses. He also provides hands-on and technical assistance to ALBA farmers who are enrolled in the farm-business incubator. 
 
Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain productive relationships with ALBA farmers; 
  • Coordinate with and support the Farm Manager in the provision of ongoing technical assistance to the farmers in the safe and appropriate use of the irrigation system and farm equipment; 
  • Track and document the use and of the irrigation system and farm equipment by each farmer; report any abuse or damage to these assets; track and report to the fiscal department payments due from each farmer; 
  • Monitor and enforce protocols to ensure the safety of persons coming onto the farm and ALBA farm facilities and property; 
  • Assist in the maintenance of farm buildings, wells, irrigation systems, and roads and help ensure compliance with facility usage policies; assist in maintaining ALBA’s cooler facility as necessary; 
  • Assists in monitoring and enforcing farm-operation protocols to ensure weed control and trash removal and to address any intrusion of tree branches into arable areas of ALBA land; 
  • Monitor each farmer to ensure that he or she is in compliance with his or her lease and farm policies; 
  • Collect monthly water samples and deliver these to the Monterey County Health Department; 
  • Participate in ALBA’s farmer and community events; 
  • Provide technical assistance to farmers including training on the use of tractors and implements; 
  • Execute the harvest and agricultural practices for crops under hoops specified by the farm manager and help maintain organic and food safety records for said crops; 
  • Assist with research/demonstration projects, as needed; 
  • Provide general ALBA program and demonstration field support. 
 
Qualifications: Two years of farm work experience with experience in crop production, some supervisory skills preferred; knowledge of organic agricultural production in the Salinas Valley; knowledge of small-and -commercial-scale organic production techniques; must be able to operate a tractor and connect implements; must have knowledge of irrigation systems; knowledge of pest management techniques; ability to communicate and maintain positive relationships with a diverse constituency, including farmers, vendors, staff, and partners; equipment maintenance experience a plus.
